$330m expansion for Melbourne's international terminal

Melbourne Airport is set for the largest upgrade of its international terminal (T2) since the airport was built in the late 1960s.The first of these key projects will be completed in 2010, with the construction of a new outbound international passenger security and Customs processing zone. Creating a new outbound passenger screening area, this project will increase security stations from 6 to 10, and increase Customs desks from 18 to 24. Security will also now be located before Customs – reversing the current sequence and improving passenger flows into the international passenger area.A completely new 7,000m² passenger concourse will be also added to T2, providing 5 new aircraft parking bays – including three gates with dual-level aerobridges, which will each be able to accommodate one A380 or two smaller aircraft. This area has been designed to maximize parking space for aircraft and will provide the closest views of runway activity passengers have ever seen.An entire new international passenger precinct will be created by 2011, which – along with a major redevelopment of existing facilities – will add more than 5,000m² of new passenger lounge, café, duty free and specialty shop space to T2. The new precinct will feature 10-metre high windows providing spectacular views into the airfield, and has been designed to incorporate signature elements and design features of Melbourne architecture.New Melbourne Airport CEO, Chris Woodruff, said that the expansion plans for T2 would set a new benchmark for airports in Australia.“These developments are set to revolutionise the international passenger experience at Melbourne Airport,“ said Mr Woodruff. “By late 2011, passengers will have unrivalled views of the Melbourne airfield, and an international terminal that is above and beyond anything seen in this country.”

The Block Arcade

The Block Arcade is one of the finest examples of a 19th Century shopping arcade. It is renowned for its impressive etched glass roof with decorative wrought iron and timber supports and has the largest mosaic floor area in Australia. The complex is classified by the National Trust and is on the register of the National Estate.

Designed by architect D.C. Askew for the financier Benjamin Fink, the arcade was constructed in two sections in 1891 and 1893. It derived its name from the tradition of "doing the block", or parading around Melbourne's fashionable shopping streets.

The arcade was restored and refurbished by the Buchan Group, which upgraded the complex to modern retail and commercial standards while remaining faithful to the original Victorian vision. The work involved the reinstatement of original timber shopfronts, the repairing, cleaning, painting and illuminating of the upper facades to Collins and Elizabeth Streets, and the design of a new entry canopy for Elizabeth Street. A popular venue within the arcade is the Hopetoun Tearooms.

Tours of the Arcade are run on Tuesdays (for bookings ring +61 3 9650 2777) & Thursdays (for bookings ring +61 3 9654 5244) starting at 1:00pm.

The Jam Factory

The Jam Factory was first established in 1858 as the Victoria Brewery with residents Albert Terry and his family also living in part of the factory. At this time, the building and land were valued at a modest 150 pounds. In 1876 the Victoria Brewery closed down. The building and land were then sold for 5,350 pounds to Robert Wright and Robert Payne. No longer a Brewery, the new company was named the Victoria Preserving Company.

Four years later, in 1880, the building became known as the 'Red Cross' preserving company. Employing 230 hands, in season the company was the largest employer in Prahran. In 1895, Mr William Peacock bought the premises and turned it into the 'OK' Jam Co. This in turn was sold once again to Henry Jones, the man behind the famous IXL brand. But then, in 1926, Henry Jones passed away and Achalen Palfreyman became Chairman of Directors. The three cottages which had been on the site since the 1850's were pulled down and a cool store built in their place.

In 1950 there was a significant downturn in the jam market. The more affluent consumer, the once great lovers of jam, were eating more fruit. Years later, in 1967, Achalen Palfreyman died. Then, three years later, production of preserves and jams at the Jam Factory ceased all together. The decade of flares, flower power and Woodstock also saw the opening of the Jam Factory shopping centre, in 1979 on the 9th of October. The cost of the development was over twenty million dollars. And now, walking through the colourful and exciting walkways and store, we have the Jam Factory of today: Village Cinemas, Borders, Virgin Megastore, Villa & Hut handcrafted Homewears, fashion stores, cafes and restaurants...The Jam Factory of today is, in short, jam packed with entertainment.
